Our Impact

At the Urban Institute for Strengthening Families (UI4SF), our work is measured in more than numbers—it’s measured in lives changed, families strengthened, and communities transformed. Since 2016, we’ve empowered fathers, youth, and families across Charlotte and Concord through fatherhood support, youth mentoring, and emotional intelligence services.

By the Numbers

We are proud of the measurable results our services have created in the community:

  • $15,000+ awarded in youth scholarships
  • $16,500+ invested in adult professional development
  • 500+ book bags delivered to students and families
  • 15,000+ touchpoints with individuals across services and workshops
  • 32 active partnerships with local schools, nonprofits, and community organizations

These numbers represent children staying in school, fathers reuniting with their families, and communities becoming safer and more resilient.

Impact on Youth

Impact on Youth: Mentorship & Education

Community-Wide Impact

Together with our 32+ partners, including schools, nonprofits, and healthcare organizations, we’ve been able to:

  • Expand access to health and wellness resources
  • Provide job readiness and financial coaching
  • Deliver mentorship to schools across Mecklenburg County
  • Build a culture of healing and accountability for men and fathers

This collaborative approach ensures every participant receives not only mentorship, but also access to housing, healthcare, and educational support.

Community Healing & Engagement

UI4SF provides more than services—we create healing spaces where men, fathers, and families can reflect, grow, and build stronger communities.

Our healing circles and workshops have helped reduce school dropouts, lower community violence, and increase civic participation.

“Fathers Haven has taught me to take responsibility for my actions, show up as a better father, and access new opportunities. It has been a game changer in my life.” – Demetrius Curry, Father Participant

Stories of Change

James Story

James’ Story – From Absent Father to Role Model

When James first joined Fathers Haven, he was struggling to rebuild his relationship with his teenage son after years of absence. Through UI4SF’s fatherhood coaching and EQ training, James learned how to communicate, listen, and show up consistently. Today, his son describes him as his “biggest supporter” and “best friend.”

Maliks Story – From At Risk Teen to College Student

Malik’s Story – From At-Risk Teen to College Student

Malik entered our EmpowerU service as a 15-year-old with low grades and little direction. With the guidance of his mentor, he developed a life plan, improved his GPA, and gained the confidence to apply for college. This fall, Malik will be the first in his family to attend a university.

Partnerships that Multiply Impact

Our partnerships with schools, community organizations, and local agencies have amplified our reach and impact. Collaborations with Mecklenburg County Government, Urban League of Central Carolinas, and local academies allow us to integrate services, expand access, and address challenges from multiple angles.

These partnerships help us provide wraparound support—connecting participants to resources like housing assistance, healthcare, and continuing education.

Looking Ahead: New Services

Our future goals include expanding our impact with:

  • North Carolina Fatherhood Institute – Statewide systems change in father engagement
  • Global Fatherhood Institute – A global hub for fatherhood empowerment and leadership development
  • Men’s Retreat for Healing & Restoration – Dedicated spaces for reflection and renewal
